I don't even know you, but I'm so proud of you right now. You demonstrate incredible resilience, considering everything you've been through. You're articulate, honest, and clearly intelligent.
I'm not just proud of you for beating the addiction, and continuing every day to win the ongoing fight against it, but also, having endured the most despicable treatment by the most hateful bunch of people in US politics, coming out the other side fully empowered to take your voice, your story and your power back from those who stole it and perverted it.
It's so strange to keep saying that I'm proud of you when I do not know you, but I don't know how else to describe this overwhelming desire to punch the air with every piece you write.

Hunter, this landed somewhere deep. "Death by slow drinking suicide" is exactly the phrase I've used for my own years in it, minus any of the spectacle you were forced to live through. No leaked laptop, no congressional hearings: just the quiet, private kind of self-erasure that depression and a bottle can build together, day by unremarkable day. Nobody was watching mine. I almost didn't survive it anyway.
Four years sober on July 17th. I read this as someone who knows exactly what "the long grinding work of coming back" costs and what it's worth. Thank you for writing this so unflinchingly. Sending real respect and solidarity.
